Dallas: Store owner uses gun to stop four robbers, police don't arrive for 75 minutes after 911 call

The 911 call was somewhat difficult to understand, but that isn't the issue.  Whatever the reason, the point is that it took 75 minutes after the 911 call for the police to arrive.  My point isn't to blame the police dispatcher or an immigrant who may not be able to speak without an accent, but to note the benefit of letting people own guns for self protection.  The 911 call was made after the attack and shooting had already occurred so the police response time at that point was irrelevant.  

On Sunday night, four men tried to rob Pepe's Grocery on Bernal Drive in West Dallas. One of them was carrying an assault rifle, but the manager of the closed store drew first, hitting his target with two shots from his .38. The would-be robbers fled, leaving a trail of blood behind.The manager, Joe Cho, called police and waited. And waited. And waited. And finally, 20 minutes after shooting an intruder, he locked up and went home. Officers arrived at the store some 75 minutes later.
"I'm at home safe, everything, I relax right now," Cho told the Morning News' Scott Goldstein. "Then you call me about an hour something later, you want me to come back over here." . . .

Who was to blame for the delay?

The Dallas Police Department was quick to shift the blame over to Cho. A spokesman said,  “The caller had a very heavy accent and was speaking very quickly…The call taker had a very difficult time understanding the information and did not hear the caller say ‘shot’ or ‘shoot.’” . . . 

I could understand much of the call, and what I couldn't understand the first time through I figured out after listening to it a couple more times.  If the dispatcher couldn't understand whether the caller was saying "shot" or "shoot," she should have asked him to stay on the phone longer.  In any case, these calls are recorded, and the dispatcher could have presumably listened to it again if necessary.

Cheltenham Township man uses AR-15 to defend himself from criminal breaking into his house

A many who was already facing charges of aggravated assault broke into this home.  From the Philly Inquirer.

An Elkins Park man was killed late Friday after he forced his way into a stranger’s apartment in Cheltenham Township.Jasper Brisbon, 32, wandered up to a couple late Friday at the Lynnewood Apartments as the pair spoke outside their unit. . . .
But as they entered their home Brisbon jumped between them, forcing his way in.
The male of the couple ran to get a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle and insisted Brisbon leave. Brisbon refused. Instead, as the man yelled “Stop! Stop Stop!” Brisbon moved menacingly toward the man, police said.
The man fired a shot striking Brisbon in the torso and immediately called 911, police said.
An ambulance rushed Brisbon to Abington Memorial Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. . . .
Police said the residents of the apartment . . . did not know Brisbon and that the AR-15 was legally purchased.

A father who was trying to eat with his family at Burger King was able to defeat an armed robber by pulling his own weapon and shooting at him, Miami police said.
It was at the height of lunch time, about 1 p.m., when a would-be robber walked into a Burger King, flashed his gun at one of the family diners, and demanded the diner fork over money and valuables, police said in a CBS report. The robber was exiting when the father, who feared for his and his family’s life, CBS said, took out his own gun and shot the suspect in the leg. . . .

Concealed carry permit holder defends himself against five men

A concealed-carry permit holder exchanged gunfire on a St. Louis street Monday night with men who tried to rob him.
No one was hit by any of the shots, police say.
It happened at about 9 p.m. Monday in the 5200 block of Goodfellow Boulevard.
Police say a man was approached by five men who tried to rob him. When he refused to turn over any of his property, one of the would-be robbers fired a shot at the victim but missed.
The victim pulled his own handgun and fired several shots at the suspects. None of his shots hit anyone either, police said.
The suspects ran off. . . .

"Spokane Grandmother Of 10 Holds Burglar At Gunpoint At Her Home"

Spokane police say a grandmother held a burglar at gunpoint at her home until authorities arrived.
KXLY-TV reports that Sandy Mize, a grandmother to 10, fired a warning shot and held the suspect, 35-year-old Sean Denny, in her living room until he tried to get away. That’s when authorities apprehended him in her backyard early Wednesday morning.
“I told him I was armed,” she told KREM-TV. “He kept coming, so I started backing up.”

Mize says she fired a warning round at the suspect but it did not hit him.
“He laid on the couch. I stood there for a very short period of time. I asked him, ‘Did I hit you?’ There was no response. No movement,” Mize told KREM. “So I made my way to the telephone and dialed 911.” . . .

NYC millionaire faces three years in jail for using unlicensed gun on a burglar inside his home

Why should people need to go through a costly and time consuming procedure to have a gun in their home?  In any case, this was a gun that was legally registered to the man's bodyguard.  So what exactly is the problem?  Can't you pick up a gun that is available when you need it if it is legally registered to another person?  This citizen even was the person who called the police!

A Manhattan millionaire faces three years in jail for drawing an unlicensed gun on a burglar inside his home . . .
Mr. Bardwil, 60, threatened the intruder . . .  The man fled and Mr. Bardwil called the police.
After showing the cops footage from his home surveillance cameras, they arrested him under suspicions of owning an illegal firearm.
The businessman’s lawyer, Michael Bachner, told the New York Post that the gun is legally registered to the defendant’s bodyguard.
“There’s no dispute that George was being burglarized,” Mr. Bachner said. “George had been the victim of multiple burglaries, and the DA’s office concedes that it was used in self defense.” . . .

Marine Corps Veteran saves a woman from being beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend

The person who stopped this crime makes a strong case for the benefits for concealed carry laws.  This dramatic case is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin:

A Marine Corps veteran was able to stop a man early Tuesday, March 12th from nearly kicking a woman to death. It happened near 102nd and Lincoln, and Wisconsin’s concealed carry law made his efforts possible.
Charlie Blackmore was driving home from work at 4:00 a.m. along Lincoln Avenue when he saw something on the sidewalk. Blackmore didn’t realize it was a woman on the ground being kicked in the head and stomach until he got closer.
That’s when he jumped out of his car and sprung into action.
“I said ‘stop’ and he starts coming towards me and that`s when I drew on him. He started getting closer and I said ‘get down on the ground,’” Blackmore said.
Blackmore held his gun on the suspect and called West Allis police. He says several times while waiting for police to arrive, the attacker moved toward him.
“I mean I’ve already made it up in mind that if he came at me I was going to have to take him down and I told him that. I warned him multiple times not to come towards me because he was a big guy and I wasn’t playing around and he didn’t seem like he was playing around,” Blackmore said.
Blackmore says police eventually showed up and had to force the suspect to the ground. They then asked to see Blackmore’s concealed carry permit. . . .

Concealed carry permit holder saves Police Officer

Permit holder saves a police officer from what would certainly be serious injury if not worse.  From WAFB 9 News in Baton Rouge, Louisiana:

. . . East Baton Rouge Sheriff's spokesman Greg Phares says Officer Brian Harrision was escorting a funeral procession Friday when he pulled Temple over and wrote him a ticket for breaking into the procession.  According to Phares, that's when Temple attacked Harrison.  Police say Perry Stevens was walking outside of the Auto Zone on Greenwell Springs Road when he heard Harrison yelling for help.  Harrison was reportedly on his back with Temple on top of him.  That's when Stevens went to his car and grabbed his .45 caliber pistol.  

According to Col. Greg Phares, "[Mr. Stevens] orders Mr. Temple to stop and get off the officer.  The verbal commands are ignored and Mr. Stevens fires four shots, all of which struck Mr. Temple." 

Perry Stevens fired four shots into Temple's torso.  Officer Harrison had already fired one shot into Temple's abdomen.  With Temple still struggling with the officer, Perry continued to advance toward the scuffle. 

"He again orders Mr. Temple to stop what he was doing and get off the officer.  Those commands are ignored and he fires a fifth shot and that hits his head.  The incident is over with, and as you know, Mr. Temple is dead." 

Police are calling the shooting death justified.  Perry Stevens has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. . . .

Woman defends herself against three male attackers

Police say a woman shot at three people this morning when she suspected them of breaking into her apartment building. 

The woman was in her third-floor apartment about 10:30 a.m. at Miami Street and Missouri Avenue when she saw three men coming up the stairs, police said. She fired one shot at the trio, prompting them to run off. It wasn't clear if anyone was shot. 

She was not hurt. Police were looking for three males but did not immediately have descriptions of them Tuesday. . . .

Employee with gun stops armed robbery

Typical very short news story that occurs frequently even if it doesn't get much news coverage.  From Lancaster, PA:

A robber who claimed to be armed fled a Lancaster sub shop without money when an employee pulled a gun of his own, police said. 

Lancaster police said the would-be robber demanded cash from Speed's Sub Shop, at 318 E. King Street, just after 10 p.m. Saturday. 

The employee pulled and then pointed his own handgun at the suspect, who immediately fled the store empty handed, police said. . . .

3 AM home break in stopped by sisters with gun

According to Highland Police Chief Terry Bell, a 33 year-old man allegedly forced his way into an apartment, in the 2600 block of Eagle Way Drive, about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.  The apartment is the home of two sisters, Debi Keeney and Donna Carlyle.  The man allegedly demanded money and attacked the women.  Keeney told police she pleaded with the man repeatedly to stop the attack and leave and when he did not, she shot him with a small 22 cal. revolver.  Bell said wounds show the man was shot twice. . . . .

Homeowner holds a drugged-out intruder at gun point until police arrive

An Washington state homeowner shot a drugged-out intruder who entered his home while he was asleep with his wife early Sunday.KPTV.com reports that the suspect, Brian L. Creed, entered the home and started walking down a hallway toward the homeowner, who was standing outside his bedroom door.
When the 24-year-old homeowner told the suspect to stop, Creed allegedly charged the homeowner, prompting him to fire a shot at the intruder, the station reported.
Creed then allegedly tackled the homeowner and the two were involved in a physical altercation until the homeowner was able to hold the suspect at gunpoint until authorities arrived. . . .

Woman shoots multiple times the attacker who broke into her home

Here is a defensive gun use from Highland, Illinois.  From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

A 55-year-old woman shot an intruder multiple times early this morning after the man allegedly pushed his way into her apartment and began assaulting the woman and her sister, according to police. . . . 

The woman told police that the man began to assault her and her 47-year-old sister. She said she pleaded with the man to stop and get out of the apartment. 

"When he failed to comply, she shot him multiple times with a small derringer" pistol, Bell said. 

Bell said the man was shot in the living room area of the apartment. Both women were treated at the scene and released. . . . 

Police confiscated the derringer that Bell referred to as "old school."

Philly Deli Owner Shoots, Kills Would-Be Robber

Philadelphia Police say a corner deli owner killed a teenager during a robbery attempt in the Tacony section of Northeast Philadelphia tonight. 

A police spokeswoman says an unidentified 19-year-old tried to rob Anna's Deli at the corner of Princeton Avenue and Jackson Street just after 6 p.m. 

Police say the teen walked in, pointed a gun at Anna Jukic and demanded money. 

"The clerk screams and the store owner, the husband, comes from the rear of the store with his weapon," said Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. Police say the suspect exchanged fire with the store owner John Jukic, 55, and was shot once in the chest. An emergency services medic pronounced him dead at the scene just after 6:20 p.m. Jukic wasn’t hurt. . . . .

72-year-old man stops three burglars who chased him into his bedroom

From Las Vegas News Channel 3:

A man suspected in a home burglary attempt is dead and another is in custody after an incident this morning near West Sahara Avenue and South Jones Boulevard. 

A news release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says its Dispatch Center received a call around 7:45 a.m. from the occupant of a home . . . indicating intruders were attempting to forcibly gain entry into his house. 

The resident, a 72-year-old male who had been the victim of a recent burglary, retreated into his bedroom and retrieved a handgun. As the suspects entered his bedroom the victim fired at least one round from the handgun, causing suspects to flee. 

Arriving officers encountered one suspect attempting to flee the area in a vehicle. This suspects’ vehicle collided with an arriving officers’ patrol car, and the suspect, a Latin male, was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. 

A second suspect, also tentatively identified as a Latin male, was last seen fleeing on foot . . . . 

Officers searching the backyard of the victim’s residence found a third individual, tentatively identified as a Latin male, deceased from an apparent gunshot would. A handgun was also recovered from the backyard. . . . .

70-year-old Detroit High School Basketball Coach uses permitted concealed handgun to stop robbery

In high crime Detroit, it is good that this older man was able to protect himself.  From WXYZ-TV:

Police sources say the coach was walking the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace. The coach then pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources. 

The man who shot the attackers was 70 years old, according to police. 

One of the attackers was found dead in the median on Lafayette Boulevard, and the other was taken to a local hospital, according to police sources. We've learned that both of the men had attended the high school, and one had been recently expelled. 

Police sources say the coach has a Concealed Pistol License and is reportedly a reserve police officer. They say he is fully cooperating with authorities. 

Crime scene tape could be seen on Lafayette Boulevard and also around the back parking lot of the school near the gym. . . .
